In-home lesson guidelines

A simple guide to making every in-home lesson comfortable, focused, and easy to manage—for your family and your teacher.

Start here

The essentials

Four habits that keep in-home lessons smooth week after week.

Be ready at lesson time

Have the student, instrument, books, and other lesson materials ready when the teacher arrives so the full lesson time can be used.

Give 24 hours’ notice for changes

Please cancel or reschedule an in-home lesson at least 24 hours in advance whenever possible.

Provide a safe, quiet lesson space

Choose a clear, well-lit common area where the student and teacher can work comfortably without unnecessary interruptions.

Keep access and parking details current

Share any gate codes, parking instructions, buzzer information, or special entry directions in advance. Let us know if these details change.

Before your teacher arrives

A few minutes of setup lets the lesson start on time and stay on music.

  • Have the instrument, books, notebook, and current lesson materials ready.
  • Clear a comfortable, well-lit common area for the lesson.
  • Minimize interruptions from screens, visitors, and household activity.
  • Secure pets if they might interrupt the lesson or make arrival difficult.
  • Share parking, gate, buzzer, and entry instructions in advance.
  • For students under 18, a responsible adult should be home or readily available.

During the lesson

A calm and welcoming setting helps everyone make the most of the lesson.

Maintain a respectful, professional environment

Your teacher is visiting your home to provide focused instruction. A calm and welcoming setting helps everyone make the most of the lesson.

Have the student ready on time

The student should be prepared when the scheduled lesson begins. Your teacher’s travel time is already built into the teaching day.

Stay available for younger students

A parent or guardian should be home and reachable during a minor’s lesson. You do not need to sit in on the lesson unless doing so helps the student.

Please do not ask teachers to transport students

Craft Music teachers cannot drive students to or from lessons, school, rehearsals, or other activities.

Scheduling, cancellations, and makeups

  • In-home lessons have a 24-hour cancellation and rescheduling notice standard.
  • A lesson canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice is considered a late cancellation. The family is charged in full, and the teacher is paid in full.
  • A makeup or alternative time following a late cancellation is not guaranteed. A teacher may choose to offer one at their discretion when their schedule allows.
  • Teachers and families may agree on another time, including a short-notice change. Craft Music must be kept informed, and the correct lesson calendar must be updated.

When plans change

If travel, illness, weather, or another circumstance makes an in-home visit difficult, the family and teacher may mutually agree to meet by live online video instead.

They may also agree on a longer or alternative lesson where appropriate. These arrangements are not automatic and depend on both parties agreeing and the teacher’s availability. Please notify Craft Music and make sure the booking is updated so everyone has the correct schedule.

Common questions

Short answers for the situations families ask about most.

Tell your teacher and Craft Music as soon as possible. Changes made at least 24 hours in advance follow the regular rescheduling policy. A same-day cancellation is considered late unless you and the teacher agree on another arrangement and Craft Music is informed.
