How long should we prepare for a first music recital?

A minimum of 6 weeks is ideal. The recital piece should be something the child can already play at 90% quality 6 weeks out. That gives 4 weeks for memorization and 2 weeks for practicing performing the piece for family members.

What if my child gets stage fright at the recital?

Some stage fright is normal and even helpful. Prepare with the 4-in, 6-out breathing exercise, plan a recovery point in case the child gets lost mid-piece, and practice performing (not just playing) in the final two weeks. The parent staying calm on recital day matters more than most parents realize.

Should we watch the recital or wait outside?

Watch the recital if the child wants you there. Most kids do. Sit where the child can see you if that is helpful, or in the back if that feels less pressuring. Ask the child what they prefer.

What if my child forgets part of the piece during the recital?

This happens to almost every performer eventually. Teach the child a jump-forward recovery point (usually the start of the next section) they can go to if they get lost. Also teach them that stopping and taking a breath, then continuing, is not a failure. Real musicians do this too.

What should I say to my child after the recital?

Praise effort and courage first. I am so proud of you for getting up there. Ask What was your favorite part of playing? to invite positive reflection. Avoid pointing out mistakes or asking how do you think that went? which invites self-criticism.
